St. Petersburg State Ranking Tournament February 10-11, 2007
31st Street Sports Complex

Dominos wins first A Division Championship

Coming into the tournament as the 10th seed, a revamped Dominos squad paved its road to the championship defeating three of the top seven teams from the 2006 final state rankings to win the first Sunshine State Games Adult Flag Football State Ranking Tournament of the year, the 2006 Kick-Off Classic in St. Petersburg.

Dominos, of Tampa, defeated the Palm Beach Knights, 27-20, the 2006 State Runner Up, the Horsemen, in a thrilling, come-from-behind 21-20 victory in the quarterfinals and Coalition, 27-24 in the semi-finals.

In the quarterfinal round win against the Horsemen, Dominos trailed by seven and found themselves kicking off to the reigning highest scoring offense in the state to open the second half.  The comeback effort started with an acrobatic redzone interception by former Division II All-American Jason Fox and the defensive play of team captain and middle linebacker Jerry Longen.

Holding the Horsemen offense to a single second half score, the Dominos comeback was capped by a game tying scoring strike from Johnny Jones to Ron Lawrence with 20 seconds remaining in the game.  On the ensuing extra point 'Dumpback'/QB Jesse Lowry scrambled just inside the pylon giving Dominos a dramatic 21-20 victory.

In the Semifinal game that would determine the tournament champion following a double disqualification in the other half of the bracket, Dominos faced nearby Seminole, FL rival, Coalition. Dominos held off a late Coalition comeback effort for a 27-24 victory with the help of dominating tournament MVP defensive performances from former University of Wyoming All-Mountain West Conference WR/Kick-Returner Alex English and former Florida State Seminoles Cornerback Charles Reed.  Their play, along with a turnover-free offensive attack, led by offensive MVPs; QB Johnny Jones, Center Glenn Harsberger and WR Dean Edwards.

Playing in their fourth season as a state tournament team, the rejuvenated Dominos team, of Tampa, earned their first A-Division championship after improving their ranking in each of the last four years.

Champions of the B Division were the Horsemen who went on from their loss to Dominos to defeat Apocolypse 31-30 in a thrilling rematch of last year’s top two scoring offenses.

The C Division was won by Hard Knox that defeated Florida Crystals, 30-26, to win its first C-Division tournament title.

Naples/Collier County State Ranking Tournament

March 3-4, 2007
North Collier Regional Park

Apocalypse moves into top spot with win at Collier County SRT

With new quarterback Brad Corliss calling the signals, Apocalypse was nearly perfect, scoring on all but two possessions and totaling 132 points in four games en route to the Collier County SRT A Division Championship.

Apocalypse won its first three games convincingly with wins over Miami's Most Wanted (35-7), the 2006 State Champion C.O.D. (34-18) and A-1 Metalcraft (36-14).  For their performances in the high scoring victories, Derrick Smith (2 INTs in win over Miami's Most Wanted), Derrick Brown (2 TDs vs. C.O.D), Steve Davis and Brad Corliss picked up MVP awards.

The A Division Championship Game against the Bodysnatchers proved to be a tougher victory.  The Bodysnatchers scored the first TD with an 60-yard opening drive.  Apocalypse responded and held a 13-12 halftime lead.

Both teams had rare defensive stops and each scored a TD going into the fourth quarter with Apocalypse holding a 19-18 edge.  Apocalypse scored the game's final TD when Steve Davis caught a pass from Corliss between his knees and hung on for the score.  The two-point conversion secured the 27-18 win.

"We were very happy with our performance considering the fact the many of our guys had never played together before this tournament," said Coach Craig Miller.  "I expect this team to get better as we play more games together and the team chemistry starts to gel."

Miami-Dade County State Ranking Tournament

March 23-24, 2007
Amelia Earhardt Park

Group One Mortgage takes Miami/Dade SRT Title

Bob Bashwiner, Captain/Quarterback of Group One Mortage, fresh off major knee surgery, led his high powered offense to victory against top-seeded Apocalypse in the championship game of the “A” Division 26-18.

Along with halfback Mike Birkhead, Bashwiner threw to a plethora of receivers which included Nick Charles, Napolean Outlaw, Perry Balasis, and Vinny Sutherland. The defense led by “Scooter” made a crucial fourth down flag pull to stop a late Apocalypse drive in an attempt for a game-tying score.

With some key additions on defense, the team will come together and make a run at a state championship, according to Bashwiner. "Every team this year seems to have a chance to win the state championship," he said.  "You can’t take any opponent lightly this year. This year’s state championship might be up for grabs to hot team at the time."

Palm Bay Ranking Tournament

April 14-15, 2007
Liberty Park

Apocalypse won its third consecutive "A" Division tournament at Palm Bay, defeating Coalition 19-0, in the Championship Game  For the first time this year, Apocalypse had its entire team available and capitalized with wins against three top 10 ranked teams.  The Apocalypse offense scored on nearly every offensive series in its four games, scoring 132 points in four games.

In Apocalypse's second game against four-time state champs, Leatherbacks, the defense gave up two 4th and 20 first down plays which ended up resulting in two TDs.  As a result, Leatherbacks held a slim 1-point lead at halftime.  Apocalypse defense shut out the Leatherbacks in the second half and won by 14 points, 34-20.

The Apocalypse defense then proceeded to shut down its final two opponents, beginning with a 40-0 shutout in the semi-finals against Elvis Lives and a 20-0 shutout of Coalition in the finals.  The stifling defense allowed an average of 6.5 points per game for the tournament (26 total) while the offense averaged 33 points over the course of the tournament.

The championship game on Sunday started under windy and light drizzle conditions, but the threat of bad weather was looming.  Apocalypse quickly gained a 13-0 advantage while the defense continued to stop Coalition.  Then rain and winds came.  In the second quarter, Apocalypse had the wind (and rain) at its back, and Coalition, who had won the toss, was trying to throw into a 35-mph wind with a rain-soaked ball.  Despite the downpour and wild weather, Apocalypse QB Brad Corliss continued to move the ball and led the team to a 20-0 lead just before halftime.  Coalition was struggling to hold on to the ball as well, and after a third straight defensive stop by Apocalypse, conceded the game just before halftime.

This is the second "A" Division championship win of the SRT season for Apocalypse who currently holds the number one ranking.  "It is obvious we have something special when all of our guys can show up," said Coach Craig Miller. "Even though we have put this team together using players from different cities all over Florida, they have good chemistry, and they are bonding well as friends, which is a tribute to their excellent character and even-keeled personalities."
