St. Petersburg State Ranking Tournament August 13-14, 2005
Fuller Park

The 2005 Kick Off Classic in St. Petersburg was won by perennial powerhouse Rusty Anchor, of St. Petersburg.  The tournament featured a 31-team field and was loaded with highly regarded and top-ranked teams.

The big story in this year’s Kick-Off Classic was the upset of defending state champions, and top-ranked Horsemen, of Orlando, in the third round by an unranked St. Petersburg team, the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders went on to defeat  fourth-seeded Apocalypse, of Pompano Beach, before falling to Rusty Anchor.

The Rough Riders are quarterbacked by Mike Ceravalo, from New Orleans. He spent the last couple years in St. Petersburg putting the team together, and is now back in New Orleans.  Mike will be flying in for future state ranking tournaments.  The other semifinalist was Raw Vera Express (Riviera Beach).

The B Division was won by the Horsemen.  They got by the Bodysnatchers, of St. Petersburg, for the division title.  The Horsemen squeezed out a one point victory over third-seeded Coalition, of St. Petersburg, to reach the finals.  The other semifinalist in the B Division was the Palm Beach Knights.

Hope Health and Wellness, of Boca Raton, won the C Division with a 10-point victory over Miami’s Most Wanted.

The C Consolation Division was won by Palm Beach Blaze  who beat Speeler, another St. Petersburg team.

Most Valuable Players for the tournament both came from the Rusty Anchor team.  Offensive MVP went Malawi Hills for his consistent play and clutch performance.  Defensive MVP went to Charles DeTorres for his tenacious defensive approach and his confident attitude that spurred his team to victory.

Palm Bay State Ranking Tournament

August 27-28
Liberty Park, Palm Bay

Apocalypse, a merger of two top-five teams from the 2004 Sunshine State Games Flag Football Series, Alpha Omega and Zimmer Alliance, defeated the reigning state champion Horsemen 35-12 to win the Palm Bay State Ranking Tournament.

Apocalypse scored early and often with 22 points by halftime in each of their four wins.  "Our offense was hitting on all cylinders and our defense played very well," said Coach Craig Miller, whose team outscored opponents 135-52.

The two-system quarterback of Brian Baer and Rob Armstrong, executed flawlessly over the weekend with no interceptions while distributing passes all over the field.  Derrick Brown and Steve Davis each caught four touchdowns while Mike McCullum and Scott Breezeback each caught three TDs.  Davis totaled 14 points McCullum had two interceptions in the championship over the Horsemen.

The merger of the two Pompano Beach teams (4th-ranked Alpha Omega and 5th-ranked Zimmer Alliance in 2004) took place in the off-season, according to Miller.  "We played in the same league and were all neighbors so it made a lot of sense."

After being eliminated in the semi-final round of the St. Petersburg SRT, Apocalypse now has a 7-1 overall record in the 2005 season.

Manatee County State Ranking Tournament

September 10-11
G. T. Bray Park

Apocalypse won its second consecutive tournament defeating the 2004 State Champions, the Horsemen, for the second time this year, 34-24, to win the Manateee County SRT.  The win propelled Apocalypse from third in the State Rankings to number one.

To secure the win, Apocalypse roared out to a 34-6 third quarter lead. To their credit, the Horsemen never gave up and fought back, scoring 18 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters.

Apocalypse averaged 33 points a game while outscoring opponents 131-37. The Apocalypse defense was at is best, shutting out Hope Health & Wellness 38-0 in the quarterfinals, and defeating the Rough Riders 32-6 in the semifinals.

Quarterbacks Rob Armstrong and Brian Baer were virtually unstoppable throughout the tournament, throwing and running for over 20 touchdowns combined.  The duo produced points on virtually every drive.

"Keep in mind that every game was stopped early due to the runaway scores. They could’ve scored more," said Apocalypse head coach Craig Miller.  "Rob is a strong-armed pocket passer, but can also run.  Brian is an elusive, scrambling-type QB.  Both are very effective, depending on the defense used against them."

Derrick Brown, Quinton McClendon, Mike McCullum and Joe Cajigas also turned in top performances.  For the second time in two weeks, Mike McCullum had an interception on Horsemen’s first drive – this time returning it for a TD.  Quinton McClendon contributed with a crucial interception in the win over the Horsemen.

defeated Coalition 38-21 to win the B Division.  Domino's defeated Citadel/American Bank 32-28 to win the C Division.

Ocala State Ranking Tournament September 24-25
Ocala Regional Sports Complex

Ocala SRT features down to the wire games

In a tournament where half of the games played were decided by a touchdown or less, Coalition, of Seminole, defeated A-1 Metalcraft/USA Fence 13-0 in the A Division Championship Game of the Ocala State Ranking Tournament the weekend of September 24-25.

Of the 28 games played over the weekend 14 were decided by a touchdown or less and nine games were decided by three points or less.  It’s a telltale sign the Sunshine State Games Adult Flag Football Series is becoming more competitive as the State Championship draws near, November 12-13 in Davie.

“In the past there were four or five teams you could count on to be there competing for the state championship,” said Tony Walton, one of the Coalition team founders and nine-year veteran.  “This year there’s eight to 10 teams that could compete for the championship. You’d better be playing your best every weekend.”

Coalition, which previously competed in the Sunshine State Games Adult Flag Football Series as Mugs and Jugs, entered the tournament ranked 11th and defeated third-ranked Rusty Anchor 27-24 in the quarterfinals.  The Coalition defense was the star of the weekend, allowing only six points in the final two games with a 13-6 win in the semifinal round over ParLaid and the shutout win over seventh-ranked A-1 Metalcraft/USA Fence in the championship game.

“Most people who compete in the Sunshine State Games Flag Football tournaments would agree we have one of the best defenses,” said Walton, Coalition’s middle linebacker and defensive captain.  “We stopped Rusty Anchor twice in the fourth quarter to win that game.”

The tournament MVP for Coalition was defensive rusher Mike Malone, substituting for Tom Knapp, who was out with an ankle injury.  “Not only did he have a good defensive tournament, but he caught a few touchdown passes as well,” said Walton.

After the loss to Coalition, Rusty Anchor advanced through the B Division and defeated Help-U-Sell/Elvis Lives 34-33 in the Championship Game.

Sunshine State Games State Championships

Bamford Park, Davie, Florida
November 12-13, 2005

Largo’s Rusty Anchor scored its fourth Sunshine State Games Flag Football Championship in six years by defeating Coalition, of St. Petersburg, 20-19 in a winner take all final of the A Division at Bamford Park in Davie.

Down 19-12, Malawi Hills outjumped a Coalition defender and came down with a  touchdown pass with :02 remaining.  Rusty Anchor made the decision to go for the win with a two-point conversion and halfback Sean Mitten’s pass to Dwayne Fuller connected to secure the win.  Mitten also threw the TD pass to Hills.  It was the third game between Rusty Anchor and Coalition in a span of six hours on the tournament’s final day.

Rusty Anchor defeated Coalition 34-18 in Sunday’s 10:10 a.m. game, dropping them into the loser’s bracket.  After defeating top-ranked Apocalypse, 38-22, Coalition lined up against Rusty Anchor at 1:40 p.m. and won 27-6 forcing a final game at 2:50 p.m.

“Everything just fell into place for us in the Championship Tournament,” said Rusty Anchor coach and slot receiver Art Collins.  “Certain teams won and certain teams lost and everything worked out for us.”

Rusty Anchor won the 2000-2002 Sunshine State Games Flag Football Championship Tournaments and was one game away from playing for the 2004 State Championship.  “The majority of the team is still the same,” said Collins.  “It’s basically the same nucleus that won three championships in a row.”

All three divisions featured final winner take all games, where teams faced each three times on Sunday, as the Bodysnatchers defeated Parker Packaging out of the losers bracket 38-14 in a final game after dropping a 21-20 contest.  TCB, of Merritt Island, defeated SL-QMI twice by scores of 20-12 and 24-15 after losing a 21-20 nail-biter, which dropped them into the loser’s bracket.
