Palm Beach County Sports Commission Presents Annual Lou Groza
Award to top Collegiate Kicker
All three of last year’s top three finalist and kickers from
some of the top-ranked teams in the country highlight the 2006 Lou
Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Preseason Watch List.
The Watch List is comprised of the top 30 preliminary candidates for
the 15th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award,
presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl and is a program of the Palm
Beach County Sports Institute. The top three finalists are honored
during the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Banquet and
Silent Auction on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the Palm Beach
Gardens Marriott. The winner is announced on Thursday, December 7,
2006 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in
Orlando, Florida.
Among kickers named to the Lou Groza Award Preseason Watch List a
Lou Groza Award finalist from last year, Mason Crosby of University
of Colorado, Jad Dean of Clemson University, and Alexis Serna of
Oregon State University.
Also making the list are the place-kickers from some of the top
rated teams this season. They include: Chris Hetland, University of
Florida; Brandon Coutu, University of Georgia; Kyle Schlicher, Iowa;
Arthur Carmody, University of Louisville; Garrett Rivas, University
of Michigan; Jordon Congdon, University of Nebraska; Paul Martinez,
University of Oregon; Chris Manfredini, TCU; James Wilhoit,
University of Tennessee; Alex Trlica, Texas Tech; Brandon Pace,
Virginia Tech.
Kickers on the Lou Groza Award Watch List were chosen based on
statistics from the 2005 season and 2006 preseason expectations.
However, all Division I-A kickers are eligible for consideration for
the award.
A panel of over 300 experts vote on the award, including Division
I-A head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters, conference
representatives, professional kickers and all previous Groza Award
finalists.
The 20 semi-finalists for the Lou Groza Award are announced on
Tuesday November 7, 2006, followed with the naming of the three
finalists two weeks later on Tuesday, November 21, 2006.
The award, now in its 15th year, is named for National
Football League (NFL) Hall-of-Fame kicker
Lou Groza, who
played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL
championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in
1954. Nicknamed “The Toe,” Groza was one of the first people to
truly make kicking an art form, and he helped usher in to football
the idea that a player could be used exclusively for kicking.

Tampa Bay Sports Commission Hosts
College Football Media Days in Tampa for the First Time
On
July 29 and 30, The Tampa Bay Sports Commission partnered with Sun
Sports & FSN Florida to host the 2006 Florida Sports Writers
Association (FSWA) College Football Media Days at the Tampa Marriott
Waterside Hotel and Marina. With the football season quickly
approaching, this two-day event provided the state's sports
reporters exclusive access to the state's twelve college football
head coaches.
Day one
featured the University of Miami's Larry Coker and the University of
Florida's Urban Meyer, while day two showcased the University of
South Florida's Jim Leavitt and Florida State University's Bobby
Bowden, among others. Highlights from the 2006 FSWA Media Days can
be seen on Sun Sports & FSN Florida throughout the month of August.
In
its 15 year history, this marks the first time the FSWA College
Football Media Days has been held in Tampa. Feedback from Sun
Sports, the Florida Sports Writers Association and many of the
coaches indicate this event could become a staple in Tampa for years
to come. University of South Florida's Head Coach Jim Leavitt
commented, "I think
the Tampa Marriott Waterside and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission did
an outstanding job hosting the 2006 College Football Media Days.
The hotel is outstanding and convenient from the airport for the
coaches and media from out of town. I can't see why media and
coaches wouldn't enjoy being right on the water and within Tampa's
wonderful downtown area."
"It's not every weekend that a community has the opportunity to play
host to each of the twelve state universities head football
coaches," said Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Sports
Commission. "Combine this fact with getting a chance to showcase
your destination to countless sports media from around the state,
and you can see why the FSWA College Football Media Days is such a
truly special event."

Gainesville Sports
Organizing Committee plays host to 2006 NORCECA Girls' Youth
Continental Championships
The 2006 North, Central
American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Girls
Youth Volleyball Championships came to a bittersweet end on Sunday,
July 30th, during the closing ceremonies. For six
straight days the O’Connell Center was turned into an international
celebration of volleyball. The six participating teams were the
United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico and
Puerto Rico. Each team was made up of girls ages 14-16, who
individually in their own countries were fierce competitors, put
their rivalry’s aside and came together to compete for their
respected countries.

In the final match of the night, the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team
swept Dominican Republic 25-13, 25-22, 25-13 to win the
championship, both teams have earned entries into the 2007 FIVB
Girls’ Youth World Championship (U-18) held at Mexicali and Tijuana,
Mexico. Puerto Rico beat Canada in three sets for third place, while
Mexico beat Honduras in three sets to earn fifth place in the
six-team tournament.
Team USA’s Tarah Murrey (El Cerrito, Calif.) was selected as the
tournament most valuable player. She scored a tournament-high 92
points over the six-day event. Murrey also captured the best scorer
and best spiker awards for the tournament.
After Gainesville Sports Organizing Committee (GSOC) Trustee, Tom
Collett notified Jack Hughes, executive director of GSOC, that the
event was available; one phone call to University of Florida
Volleyball Coach Mary Wise put the wheels in motion to put together
a bid for the 2006 NORCECA Girls Youth Volleyball Championships. By
submitting and winning the bid, the GSOC was given the chance to
host something never before in Gainesville, an international
volleyball tournament.
By hosting this tournament GSOC opened the door for future USA
Volleyball and NORCECA events to be held in Gainesville.
“We would be
unable to host this great international volleyball qualifier without
the financial support of the Florida Sports Foundation regional
grant program and Alachua County through their sports tourism grant
and bid pool,” said Jack Hughes, GSOC’s Executive Director. “We were
excited about the opportunity during this event to work with USA
Volleyball and the University of Florida. We learned that our
community is ripe for future hemispheric competitions.”

Polk County Sports
Marketing instrumental in Florida Youth Soccer relocation to Polk
County
The Florida Youth Soccer
Association (FYSA), the City of Auburndale, and Polk County Tourism
and Sports Marketing (PCTSM) announced that FYSA will move its
corporate headquarters to Polk County. FYSA’s headquarters will be
located in Auburndale at the soon to be built Lake Myrtle Soccer
Complex.
“The move marks one of the most significant relocations of a sports
governing body in Florida history”, said Larry Pendleton, Executive
Director of the Florida Sports Foundation.
With the move, FYSA will relocate its corporate office and more than
20 events, which will generate more than $35 million in economic
benefits for the area on an annual basis.
“Florida Youth Soccer Association, with our 100,000 players and
20,000 coaches and volunteers, is extremely excited about this new
partnership with the City of Auburndale and Polk County Sports
Marketing,” said Barb Newton, President of FYSA. “The construction
of a permanent multi-field complex in central Florida for our FYSA
sanctioned events has been a dream of this organization for many
years. Seeing that complex become a reality, in addition to the
construction of a new office as the permanent home for the
organization, will catapult us to a new level as a youth national
state association.

Mark Jackson, Director of Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing
said, “We are extremely pleased to bring this project home and we
welcome FYSA to Polk County. We have been working with them for more
than two years on this project. They are a first class organization
and with the City of Auburndale, this partnership will become a very
productive economic engine for Polk County.”
Construction of
the complex is estimated to take two years from the initial
permitting to the time we have a playable venue, according to Robert
R. Green, Auburndale’s City Manager. Currently there are three
soccer fields on the site; eight additional fields will be
developed, for a total of eleven competition fields at final build
out. The FYSA’s 12,000 square foot headquarters will include:
meeting rooms, concessions stands, offices, and storage. Each soccer
field will be constructed to FYSA specifications and competitive
dimensions (365 x 225 feet), and include permanent lighting. The
championship field will include seating for 1,500 spectators. The
new complex is located between Berkley Road and the Polk Parkway
(Highway 570), on the eastern shore of beautiful Lake Myrtle.
Other sports organizations that call Polk County home include the
Independent Softball Association, the Duramed FUTURES Tour, the
official developmental tour to the LPGA, and USA Water Ski.
Information about PCSM is available on its website at
www.centralfloridasports.com.

Miami Dade
Sports Commission presents Miami Sports Kickoff Classic
The Miami-Dade Sports Commission (MDSC) announced today the Miami
Sports Kick-off Classic will be the pre-season opener for the
Miami-Dade County high school football season. Created by the MDSC
and the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC), the event will
take place annually at the start of each football season.
“The
road to the state football championship now starts and ends in
Miami,” said Mike Sophia, Executive Director of MDSC. “We want to
put a spotlight on the great tradition and passion of high school
football in South Florida, building to the Dodge FHSAA Football
Finals at Dolphin Stadium in December.”
The
Miami Sports Kick-off Classic will be hosted at Florida
International University on Saturday, August 19, 2006. In its
inaugural year, the event will consist of two games with four teams
from Miami-Dade County that do not typically meet during the regular
high school football season. Teams will play full four quarter
games.
The
schedule for the Miami Sports Kick-off Classic will be as follows:
August 19, 2006
6:00 PM—Miami Central Senior High School vs. Miami Edison High
School
8:30 PM—Northwestern Miami Senior High vs. Booker T. Washington High
School
The
event marks the start of a season long celebration of high school
football, leading up to the 2006 Dodge FHSAA Football Finals at
Dolphin Stadium. “The Road to Miami” will include a Game of the Week
featuring the premiere high school match- ups in both Miami-Dade and
Broward Counties. The Road to Miami series can be followed at
www.RoadtoMiami.org.
“The
Miami Sports Kick-off Classic is a great opportunity for everyone to
get a preview of the young and exciting talent our community and
athletic system produces,” states Cheryl Golden, GMAC. “We believe
that the ‘Road to Miami’ not only ends in Miami with the FHSAA
Football Finals, but begins here as well. These games will help set
that championship atmosphere and mind set for players, coaches,
parents and fans for the entire football season.”

Pensacola
Sports Association hosts NASC Market Segment meeting
The Pensacola Sports Association has been chosen to host the 2006
National Association of Sports Commissions Market Segment meeting
for the Mid to Smaller Market category. Pensacola was chosen to be
the location for the meeting out of small and mid size sports
commissions across the country. Representatives from other sports
commissions will come to Pensacola to discuss key issues faced in
the sporting world. The meeting will be held September 12-13.
