Speaking of Florida Senior Games State Championships Registration

Senior athletes who have qualified for the 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships and want to get their registration out of the way early, can find competition information and registration forms at www.flasports.com in pdf documents.  Online registration will be available in the coming weeks and Registration books will be sent out by October 1.

One senior athlete, Joe Mc Laughlin, a race walker from The Villages, must have been thinking about beating the registration crush last Thursday when the information was posted at www.flasports.com.  He downloaded the info and sent his registration in the FSF office via overnight mail to become the first registered participant of the 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships.

Mc Laughlin won a bronze medal in the 2006 State Championships 5K Race Walk in the 70-74 age group.

What’s in store for the future of Dodgertown?

As published in the Vero Beach Press Journal, September 7, 2007

With the Los Angeles Dodgers moving to Arizona for their 2009 Spring Training and vacating historic Dodgertown and Holman Stadium, the $64,000 question around the Vero Beach area is, “What happens next?”

Indian River County Administrator Joe Baird confirmed Thursday he is still in negotiations with a major league baseball team that could replace the Dodgers

for spring training in Vero Beach.

While the Dodgers are working on construction plans for their two-team facility in

Glendale, Ariz., Baird has been fielding inquiries from teams interested in taking their place at Dodgertown and the talks have been narrowed to a single team.

"We are still in serious negotiations," Baird said. "We have had other inquiries, but we are just in negotiations with one team. This team approached us first."

Baird said he is unable to name the team because he signed documents stating he would not disclose information for economic development reasons. He has been negotiating with the team for several weeks and hopes to come to an agreement by October.

The Dodgers have trained in Vero Beach for 60 years, and Baird has made it clear to the team he would like to build a similar relationship with the next occupant of the complex.

THE POSSIBILITIES

Here's a quick look at two teams that may be interested in moving to Vero

Beach.

Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles visited Vero Beach in December and were spotted at Dodgertown this spring. Shortly after their visit, they agreed to a lease that would keep them in Fort Lauderdale for at least 15 more years, assuming a plan for a $40 million overhaul of the 45-year-old Fort Lauderdale Stadium goes through.

Cincinnati Reds: The Reds are struggling to find funding for a new stadium in

Sarasota. The Herald Tribune reported Aug. 23 that city commissioners are

pronouncing the $45 million project dead if county commissioners do not approve $22 million to help pay for it. However, the county decided last week not to vote on the funding until after city voters have their say Nov. 6 on a bond referendum that would commit $16 million in property taxes to the project.

Magic’s Howard Receives NBA Community Assist Award For July

In recognition of Dwight Howard’s outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic work, the NBA has honored the Orlando Magic center with the Community Assist Award for July.

Howard was extremely active in the Orlando community during the NBA season, including providing basketball camp scholarships and purchasing 40 tickets for each game for at-risk youth to have the opportunity to see the Magic in action. Howard’s efforts have continued during the offseason as well, in Orlando and his hometown of Atlanta, GA.

On July 2, Howard made a surprise visit to the Pine Hills Boys & Girls Club which has more than 300 members. The club had been the victim of break-ins resulting in the loss of a new television and computers. During Howard’s visit he announced he would be donating $17,500 so the Club could replace the computers, purchase a new television, and buy new furniture for the younger children to enjoy.

During his visit Howard also decided to take 75 kids on a shopping spree with each child receiving a $100 gift card to spend on whatever they wanted. That afternoon, Dwight treated another group of kids from the Club to lunch at Chuck E. Cheese’s.

“I think the kids give more to me than I could ever give to them and it just brings a smile to my face to make someone happy,” said Howard. “It’s my obligation as an NBA player to give back whenever I can and it really is something I truly enjoy doing.”

As the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award, Howard will receive the David Robinson Plaque with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece.” In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 donation will be given to the Pine Hills Boys & Girls Club & House of Hope on Howard’s behalf.
