~Four participating athletes honored as Humana Game Changers for exemplifying healthful aging through their spirit and determination~

As part of its commitment to seniors and healthy living, Humana – in partnership with the Florida Sports Foundation – will be the presenting sponsor of the Florida Senior Games through 2020. The Florida Senior Games is an annual, multisport event for adults age 50 and over that will being held through Sunday, December 10 in Clearwater, Florida, with 2,000 athletes participating.

With Florida’s senior population growing more rapidly than any other age demographic in the state, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 32.5 percent of Florida’s population will be 60 and older by the year 2030, an increase of 34 percent from 2012. Humana wants to ensure that all Florida seniors have opportunities to age healthfully through this partnership and the inspirational athletes who will compete in these Games

“The Florida Senior Games is a great opportunity for aging adults to learn and compete in a variety of sports, form lifelong friendships and improve their health through physical and social activities,” said Deb Galloway, Central/North Florida Regional Medicare President at Humana. “We’re proud to support the Florida Senior Games to ensure the benefits of sports continue to reach more Florida seniors.”

Humana’s commitment to the Florida Senior Games represents a natural progression as Humana has been the presenting sponsor of the National Senior Games since 2007 and partners with various state games nationwide.

“With our state’s special year-round environment for sports, the Florida Sports Foundation, a division of Enterprise Florida, Inc., is committed to promoting the choice of active living,” said Angela Suggs, president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation. “As a destination for top athletes throughout the United States and abroad, we are excited about this great partnership with Humana and look forward to supporting our athletes as they continue to break records and defy stereotypes.”

    1. Hi Lewis –

Thanks for your inquiry about the 2018 Florida Senior Games. What sport is it you are interesting in competing? Some sports require a qualifying performance at one of more than 20 Florida Senior Games Series Qualifiers that run between January and November 2018. If you finish in the top five of your age group, which would be 75-79, you qualify for the 2018 Florida Senior Games in Clearwater. Some sports do not require a qualifying performance and you go directly to the Games in Clearwater. The 2018 Florida Senior Games is a qualifier for the 2019 National Senior Games.

I look forward to your reply so we can get you going in the Florida Senior Games. Talk to you soon.

Thanks for your inquiry about the Florida Senior Games. If you would like to compete in Power Walk/Race Walk, there may be some options locally.

If you visit http://www.flasports.com/event_categories/fsg-series-qualifiers/, you will find a listing of local Senior Games Qualifiers. There are four in South Florida between now and the State Games in December. Two offer racewalk and track and field, the South Florida Senior Games and the Delray Beach Senior Games.

Also, Race Walk and Power Walk are open sports and do not require a qualifying performance at a local senior games. Once registration is open you can register for the 2018 Florida Senior Games in Clearwater, December 1-9, 2018. The two local games offer you a practice opportunity.

As far as training goes, I’m not sure how to assist you with that. I’m sure there are some track and field clubs in the area that can offer you some assistance. Best of luck and we look forward to seeing you at the 2108 Florida Senior Games. You may contact me directly at ngandy@flasports.com for further assistance if needed.
